Thumb Sucking Can Be Harmless
To A Certain Point
So your kid sucks their thumb and you’re not sure how that will affect them in the future. The good news is that it’s a totally natural reflex that starts even when they are in the womb to help them feel secure and relaxed. But the not-so-great news is that it can be hard to stop and before too long, it may cause teeth to shift and alter their appearance and airways.
When It’s A Problem
Thumb sucking generally is not a problem because most children stop by the age of 4. However, if children continue, there is a chance that it may result in an overbite (where the front teeth jut out) or change their facial growth pattern. In some cases, it can lead to sensitivity in the roof of the mouth.
Stop Thumb Sucking Before It’s A Problem
If we are able to slow the need for thumb sucking at an early age, it’s one of the earliest ways to promote healthy jaw growth and teeth alignment. This could mean less treatment in the future and more savings for you. The sooner we can improve the function of the mouth, the easier it is to correct the bite and jaw issues. Thumb sucking cessation is super hard and often requires the help of a supportive team. We can be your support system.
